Relationships, platonic and romantic, can be hard to build and be keep strong. Communication, to include being a great listener, is a key piece of maintaining and building strong relationships. Not all people that you meet will be friends or develop past a general acquaintance, however, there will be some that will make the step to close friends or even romantic relationships. Learning to be successful in those relationships will be a key to personal happiness and fulfillment.
Remember that no person is perfect and entering into any relationship will be tricky. You are combining two personalities, upbringings and ideas and trying o to forge a new bond with common ground. Below are some great tips to help you in forming these relationships as well as tips for relationships that you are already a part of.
Practice listening to the person you are interested in developing a relationship with. This will give you insight on their history, philosophy, and expectations from a relationship.
Be willing to let your own guard down. This doesn’t mean telling all your deepest, darkest secrets, just be willing to talk about yourself. Many people find this a difficult thing to do.
Forgiveness is also important in a relationship that has value to you. To keep a personal relationship, try to listen before criticizing.
Remember that the other person is not there to make you happy. Your happiness is your responsibility so minimize blaming. This way, you can enjoy the other person’s company without feeling dependent on them.
Be honest about everything always. Even in the smallest matter. Being honest is the most important thing in a relationship.
Respect the needs of your partner. Keep your wants balanced with theirs. This way no one gets constant advantage.
